PROF. EMMANUEL OBED
Prof. Emmanuel Obed Acquah is a distinguished Ghanaian scholar, composer and musician who has combined scholarship, creativity and leadership to make a lasting impact on music and the creative arts. Rising through the academic ranks at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) from Lecturer to Professor, he has established himself as one of Ghana’s foremost authorities in music composition, education, performance and scholarship. He currently serves as Dean of the School of Creative Arts, University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
A versatile musician, Professor Acquah is also a church organist, teacher of songs, and prolific composer. His works span sacred, secular, and patriotic genres. He has arranged countless indigenous Ghanaian tunes for the pianoforte and produced vocal works with piano, choral pieces, instrumental works, institutional and anniversary anthems, and African-inspired piano arrangements for schools and colleges. His celebrated album Jesus Nkwa Boodoo—featuring sacred songs in English and Akanha – has been widely adopted by churches and choral groups.
To his credit are seventy-eight (78) choral works, thirty-six (36) hymn tunes with descants, numerous vocal-piano pieces, violin works, and piano duets on Ghanaian folk themes. Academically, Professor Acquah holds a PhD in Arts and Culture (Music Composition Option) from UEW, an MPhil in Music from the University of Ghana, and an LLB (First Class) from KAAF University College. His multidisciplinary expertise reflects his commitment to bridging music, law, and education. A prolific researcher, he has authored and co-authored over 70 publications, including scholarly articles, discographies, and creative works, while presenting at numerous international conferences.
His professional service includes roles as Chief Examiner for WAEC, External Examiner for local and international universities, Secretary-General of the Ghana National Association of Music Teachers (GNAMT), and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of African Arts and Culture. He has also reviewed books, curricula, and manuscripts for leading institutions.
Professor Acquah’s leadership extends to academic governance, having served as Head of Department, Examinations Officer, and Director of Quality Assurance, where he introduced reforms that strengthened accountability and excellence at UEW. As both a scholar and composer, Professor Acquah brings to the editorial board a unique blend of academic rigour, creative artistry and professional experience in music composition globally.
